How a student learn android programming in 3 days to publish an app with 5000+ downloads

Android 101 Workshop

Rufaidah was one of the students from the Android 101 workshop that was jointly organized by Mendaki Club and qiscus. She’s currently studying banking and finance in Singapore Polytechnic.

Like most students, the Android 101 workshop was the very first exposure she had to the world of programming. However, in just 3 days, Rufaidah and her coursemates produced about 3 android apps. From then on, it was definitely a huge step for all of them in the world of value creators.

Meet Rufaidah

Let’s hear it from Rufaidah who will share more about her experience:

Rufaidah and Syazreema covered in Berita Harian 5th May 2014

Was the workshop successful in helping you get started to produce android apps?

The workshop was wonderful, especially with very patient qiscus facilitators. The workshop helped me grasp basics of programming, the softwares required, the language used in Android programming and how to add features into my app. Most importantly, I learned how to look for solutions on the web to the problems that I faced on my own.
After the workshop, I managed to create a content-based application called alMusolla SG(previously Musolla Malls SG).

Tell us more about the app that you’ve uploaded and how many downloads has it have?

The app I uploaded about 1 month after I graduated from Android 101, is alMusolla SG.
It provides users with information on the nearest Musolla to them while they are out and about. Currently it has garnered more than 5000 downloads!
I got the idea when I realised that usually my fellow Muslims try to find the most isolated places to pray especially when we are in malls as the nearest mosque is not too near. Hence the app was created.
Publishing the app was exciting. I was afraid that people won’t like the app and not many would use it. However, this is my very first try and I know I’ve got to start somewhere.
The most tiring thing is having to keep updating the application, but updating keeps me on my toes and connected with my users.

What would you say to other students who are considering to take the Android 101 workshop organized by qiscus?

Go for it! If you never try you’ll never know!
Who knows, maybe your app might be the next big thing!
